“Find a mentor who will inspire you for years to come.”
“Very few graduates of Kent Place could look back on their time there without identifying at least one, if not many, mentors who shaped who they were as students and as people. Ask any student from my era, and she’s likely to tell you that Mrs. Jacobus’ contagious passion for US history inspired us to watch documentaries during our frees to prepare for the AP exam or remembers climbing the stairs to Dr. Cole’s class in anticipation of a heated discussion of the latest novel we’d read.

“It doesn’t stop there: My Kent Place teachers live on like legends and their mentorship influences me to this day. I hope all the current and prospective students realize how lucky they are. The recent college-admission scandal reminds us that the playing field is not level. A good education isn’t a given, and access to a good education isn’t given equally to all.

“The awareness of this inequity in some ways led me to Student/Partner Alliance, a Summit-based nonprofit that provides deserving high school students with mentors and tuition assistance at private high schools in urban New Jersey. Since 1993, S/PA has awarded more than 2,050 scholarships. I was especially drawn to the mentoring component of our program: I mentor a high school freshman and will continue to until she graduates. I often think about the relationships with my teachers and coaches from Kent Place when I text or sit down with her, and hope she, too, is inspired by her teachers.

“I’m so thankful KPS prepared me to be part of Student/Partner Alliance, an organization that promotes the importance of quality education for students who would not otherwise be able to finance a private school education.”
