“Art provides a new way of seeing and experiencing the world.”
“Former Kent Place art teacher Ingrid Edwards was instrumental in teaching me to see and think in new ways. Her lessons in the painting studio and art history classroom, combined with our visits to galleries and museums, inspired my love for art and taught me the impact it makes on individuals and the world. Her encouragement led to my nearly 30-year career in the arts.

“As a curator of public art in the New York City mass transit system, our team of professionals at MTA Arts & Design introduces world-class art, poetry and music to more than 8.5 million people each day, serving as a clear counterpoint to the blur of hustle and hurry that is a fact of daily city life.

“We recently installed artwork as part of the new Second Avenue Subway at 72nd Street. Artist Vik Muniz created ‘Perfect Strangers,’ which features 40 life-sized, colorful mosaics depicting a wide range of New York characters. Commuter Sumana Harihareswara, an Indian-American, was brought to tears when she saw the portrait of a South Asian woman wearing a traditional sari and was quoted as saying, ‘There is no feeling quite like seeing yourself cemented into the infrastructure of New York. It lets me know that my city loves me.’

“Each time I talk with an artist or work with our team to plan new projects, I refer to the lessons I learned at Kent Place: Art provides an opportunity to alter the trajectory of a day. Art has the power to surprise and delight, to change a mood, to make a connection and to create a new way of seeing and experiencing the world.”
