“A strong foundation in effective team building, communication and a dedication to mentoring are essential — no matter what field you pursue!”
“My science classes at KPS through medical school have provided the knowledge to navigate the complicated world of medicine, but most of my job as a physician requires a strong foundation in teamwork and communication. These skills were first introduced to me at Kent Place — and I continue to cultivate them every day.

“Medicine, and in particular pediatrics, has evolved into a multi-disciplinary, team-based and family-centered field. I interact daily with residents, nurses, child life specialists, and social workers, and each team member is essential to our care of children. Beyond working in teams, what I love most about my job is the special bond formed with families. In order to quickly gain a family’s trust in an often vulnerable moment, good communication is key. The first step is always to ask and listen first, understand their goals and wishes, and only then start to develop plans that align with their values. The teamwork and communication skills I learned at Kent Place through athletics and extracurricular activities continue to help me be a better doctor and leader.

“My dedicated teachers at KPS were my first mentors and role models. When teaching medical students and residents, nothing is more satisfying than seeing them succeed — watching them guess the correct diagnosis, perform a procedure for the first time or lead a difficult conversation is a great gift. I am indebted to those who cheered me on at KPS and only hope I can continue to ‘pay it forward.’”
