World Language

Knowing how to communicate in another language is an essential element of an excellent 21st-century education. Language is a cultural phenomena that allows us to guide students to discoveries of world cultures. To study a language is to gain insights into different global perspectives and to gain both knowledge and experience to become a leader in today’s world. Communication in a world language leads to possibilities to share work and ideas in the fields of science, math, music, art, history, literature, theatre, economics and so much more with others all over the planet. We strive to prepare our students to go anywhere, discuss anything and make significant contributions in both their personal and professional lives through the use of their language skills and their understanding of other cultures. Throughout our program language learning is supported by the ACTFL national standards of the five Cs: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities.

Did You Know...

  • KPS girls and boys begin to learn French and Spanish in Junior Pre-Kindergarten.
  • 90% of our students earn a 3 or higher on the AP French Language and Culture exam and 100% earn a 3 or higher on the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. Courses beyond the AP level are Spanish VI: Women's Voices in Hispanic Literature and French VI: Women's Voices in Francophone Literature.
  • In the years 2017-18 and 2018-19, four students pursued Independent Studies in Chinese, French, and Spanish. These students took all our advanced classes first, and then created their own research topic proposals with a faculty advisor.
  • All sixth-graders take one trimester each of Latin and Chinese in addition to a full year of either French or Spanish. In the seventh grade, students may elect to pursue Latin or Chinese instead of their other language.
  • Spanish students earned travel or college scholarships awarded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
  • STEAM topics are richly embedded into our PS curriculum. One highlight is the Jardin Français and the Jardín Español, where students grow plants native to French or Hispanic countries such as lavender and peppers.
  • During the last 10 years, the World Language Department has sponsored and led global learning trips to China, Italy, France, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Peru.
