Kent Place Senior Signs Letter of Intent on National Signing Day

A Kent Place School senior signed a letter of intent on Wednesday, November 14, National Signing Day, to continue her athletic career at the university level.
Kaira Brown plans to participate on the track team at Vanderbilt University.

“It was really exciting to sign my letter surrounded by family, friends, coaches, and teachers who helped me get to this point,” Kaira says. “Even though I was the one holding the pen, the people in that room, many of whom believed in me before I believed in myself, are the reason there was anything to sign at all.”

Kaira started running in seventh grade on the Kent Place Middle School track team. She says the environment and physical education requirements led her to track in the first place.

“I felt safe to try new things at Kent Place, and when I realized that I might actually be good at running, I always received support from my teammates and coaches in the Middle School,” Kaira says. “The confidence I built at KPS is something I’ll definitely take with me when I go to Vanderbilt and compete with some of the best in the country.”

Among her many accomplishments, Kaira is the 2018 New Jersey state and Union County champion in the 400m dash and holds the record for the indoor 400m (56.17) and 800m (2:21.67).

“My time-management skills have been a huge part of what Kent Place has taught me about being a student-athlete,” she says. “With all of the meets I’ve had to miss class for, I learned how to advocate for myself.”
