Sweet Lessons: Fourth-Graders Explore Language Through Local Eateries

Kent Place fourth-grade students recently brought language to life through their study of neighborhoods in French and Spanish. As a culminating experience, the students visited a local French bakery and a Mexican restaurant.

Fleur de Sel Patisserie Bistro and Mexican Spice are located just down the road in Chatham. Both establishments, owned by multilingual women, provide students with the unique opportunity to order in the target language, practicing their communication skills in a real-world setting.

At Mexican Spice, students enjoyed churros and Mexican sodas. At Fleur de Sel, students selected treats from a beautiful display of French desserts and baked goods.

“I tried a new drink, and I liked it a lot!” says Ellie Newman ’34..

Says Addie Walker ’34, “I was happy when I realized how much Spanish I’ve learned.”

“This experience builds confidence, deepens cultural understanding, and highlights the joy and purpose of language learning,” says Dora Gragg, who teaches Spanish in the Primary School.
