Nine Kent Place Eighth-Graders to Be Published in the Young Writers Anthology

Nine Kent Place Eighth-Graders to Be Published in the Young Writers Anthology

Nine Kent Place eighth-grade school students entered a contest through the Young Writers organization, and all of them had their work selected for publication in the Young Writers Anthology. The anthology is set to come out in June.

Open to students ages 10–18, the challenge — “Unsolved” — tasked writers with building tension, intrigue, and excitement in a crime fiction story. With a limit of just 100 words, students experimented with character, viewpoint, tension, and structure.

Congratulations to our winners: Camryn Albuquerque, Wenqing Bao, Claire Chen, Raina Chopra, Chelsea Danso, Pearl Dawadi, Ira Sahay, Zara Sharma, and Abbie Slattery.

Mentoring the students was eighth-grade English teacher Mackenzie Melita.

Says Ms. Melita, “Not only did these nine now soon-to-be-published authors take the risk of submitting their writing to be read — and judged — but they also took risks by weaving tales of mystery and crime in less than 100 words. No easy feat, and I’m so proud of their efforts!”

The school with the best set of entries will receive the Young Writers Award of Excellence, and the organization will select three students to win an Amazon gift card. These winners will be announced in the fall.

Congratulations to all!
