Kent Place Celebrates Ramadan Night

Kent Place Celebrates Ramadan Night

On March 2, the Kent Place community gathered to celebrate Ramadan Night, hosted by the Diversity and Equity Parent Group in partnership with the Community Life and Well-Being Office. Families, students, faculty, and friends filled the Great Room for an evening of delicious food, hands-on activities, and music.

The evening opened with remarks from Amirah Ali ’27, Fatima Aleem ’28, Lamece Abuhamoud ’28, and Sara Toklu ’35 and then Head of School Jennifer Galambos. During their welcome, participants received sweet dates — used to break the fast at sunset.

Traditional dishes were then enjoyed by all: filet mignon, chicken kebab, kofta kebab, and shawarma catered by Al-Basha, as well as burek pie, chana daal, butter chicken, and palak paneer. The Toklu ’35 family provided homemade Turkish food — rolled grape leaves, stuffed dried eggplant skins, and fried eggplant with sauce.

The feast continued with desserts: golda baklava, golda milk and cocoa baklava, kataifi, zatar pie, mahamara pie, sujuk pie with cheese, date cookies, and one made by Lamece’s grandmother. To drink, guests sipped on mango lassi and chai.

The community then had fun water-marbling, tile-painting, and designing with henna, and Aliya Abdoolraman ’33 and Zara Ali ’32 helped guests make Arabic-name bracelets. The evening concluded with beautiful music from a visiting musician who played the ney, an ancient end-blown reed flute.

Thank you to all who made the evening a success, and also to everyone who attended. The final DEPG cultural event of the year — Jewish Cultural Night — will take place on May 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Great Room. We hope to see you then!
