Kent Place Celebrates Hispanic Heritage at Annual Latinx Night

Kent Place Celebrates Hispanic Heritage at Annual Latinx Night

On September 24, Kent Place’s Diversity and Equity Parent Group (DEPG) hosted its annual Latinx Night, inviting friends and family of the school’s community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Latin food and entertainment.

This year, guests danced the night away on the Mabie House lawn. Bombazo Dance Co. performed the bomba — a traditional Puerto Rican dance and style of music with African roots. Attendees also enjoyed performances by the Newark Arts High School Latin Jazz Band, and by Alejo Portela, Colombian musician and accordion player. Sienna Cruz-Espejo ’34 performed Latin percussion and danced the bomba, and Ellina Cruz-Espejo ’37 also danced the bomba.

Between performances, DJ OneDay — whose heritage is Colombian and Guatemalan — kept the energy high while guests enjoyed tasty Hispanic food from La Cocina and thirst-quenching beverages from Tortas Lokas.

Thank you to DEPG Cochair Natalia Espejo and Carlos Cruz, both P ’34 ’37, who coordinated this year’s event, and to the Kent Place Community Life and Well-Being Team.

The next DEPG cultural event, in celebration of Diwali, will be held on Wednesday, October 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Great Room. We hope to see you there!
