On Wednesday, September 25, the Great Room was transformed into “Repertorio Español” — the nation's preeminent LatinX theater — for Kent Place’s annual LatinX Night celebration.
Emi Winter: “Two Worlds” at Kent Place Gallery
The Kent Place Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Emi Winter from Monday, September 16 through Friday, October 25, 2024. An opening reception with the artist will be Friday, September 20, 5:00–7:00 p.m.
This exhibition is titled “Two Worlds." Winter’s oil paintings in this show are rooted in the physical, visible world, but also speak to other levels of experience. At monumental scale and with convincing color and handling, the images show us a jaguar stalking the landscape, mounds of stones, and other images of nature, combining directness of touch with symbols that point beyond the literal.
Gallery Director Ken Weathersby stated, “I’m so happy to bring this powerful body of work to Kent Place. There is an intensity of vision in these pieces that seems connected to the complicated time we live in, as well as to how we process all of that in our dreams and emotions. These paintings also have resonance with deeper histories. One painting seems in conversation with Giovanni di Paolo’s 1398 painting ‘The Creation of the World.' Other stories we may perceive in the work reflect Winter’s connection with Oaxaca, Mexico, where she grew up.”
Winter said of her art, “Often I paint what’s right in front of me.” She added, though, that she titled the show “Two Worlds” because it seems straightforward, and yet leaves an openness for interpretation by those who view it.
Winter was born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1973. She holds an MFA with Honors from Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, and a BA in Visual Arts from Oberlin College. Her work has been seen in numerous solo exhibitions at galleries in New York, New York; Oaxaca, Mexico; Los Angeles, California; San Francisco, California; Dusseldorf, Germany; and Basel, Switzerland, and has been awarded prestigious fellowships and residencies. She currently lives in New Jersey and Oaxaca, Mexico.
