Bella Builione ’28 Earns Invitation to U-16 Junior Women’s National Team Selection Camp

Bella Builione ’28 was recently invited to attend the U-16 Junior Women’s National Team Selection Camp at the University of North Carolina, which will be held in Charlotte January 9–11, 2026. Bella has been a standout field hockey player at Kent Place: She was named Most Valuable Player for both of her varsity seasons.

The Selection Camp follows a three-day training camp. Bella is one of just 50 girls picked nationwide and one of five from New Jersey. Athletes will compete for a spot on the 2026 U-16 Women’s National Teams.

We asked Bella about her experience so far.

What athletic skills have you developed by being a part of USA Field Hockey?

Being a part of the USA Field Hockey program has enabled me to grow in several areas of my play, both technically and mentally. On the field, I’ve improved my ability to make quick decisions under pressure because the speed of play on the national level is so fast. In addition, because every small detail matters at the higher level, I’ve learned to be more precise with my first touch, passing, and off-ball movement. Beyond skills, I’ve grown in my communication and leadership. Training with players from all over the country has pushed me to be more vocal and confident and to adapt to different styles of play. Overall, this experience has raised my standards for what high-level play looks like and motivated me to continue improving.

How did you prepare for the USA Field Hockey Junior Women’s National Team Selection Camp?

To prepare, I did both individual and group training. On my own, I focused on conditioning, stick skills, and getting consistent reps so I would feel confident in my basics. During the week, I trained with my club teammates who were also attending the camp (both U-16 and U-18), which pushed all of us to work hard and hold each other accountable. Along with that, I did my regular club team training schedule, so I was getting a lot of touches and competitive play. The preparation took both consistency and discipline, and ultimately is what helped me feel ready to compete at the national level.

How has Kent Place athletics helped prepare you to compete at such a high level?

Kent Place prepared me by instilling strong values of drive, accountability, and respect through our athletics program. My coaches have consistently pushed my teammates and me to raise our standards and compete with confidence. The supportive and competitive environment at Kent Place has helped me develop a strong work ethic and mindset that enables me to perform under pressure.

What will you take from your time with USA Field Hockey back to Kent Place?

I’ll bring back a higher level of intensity, discipline, and attention to detail. Being able to see the standards at the national level showed me how important it is to execute the basics well and stay focused over an entire session. I also hope to bring back the communication and teamwork skills I developed. Playing with athletes I’d never met before taught me how to adjust quickly and support others to contribute to a positive environment. I hope to use these lessons by leading by example and helping create a competitive and strong culture.
