At a Glance: A Guide to Upper School Clubs and Pubs
This year, there are more than 40 clubs and six publications in the Upper School.
Last year, 94 percent of Upper School students participated in at least one club or publication, with a similar percentage of participation expected this year.
More than 100 students hold leadership positions each year.
What is the Club Fair? At the start of every academic year, student leaders set up stations throughout the Upper School with poster boards filled with helpful information about each club and publication. Fellow Upper School students then have the opportunity to visit each station, learn more, and sign up for the clubs and pubs they’re interested in. There’s usually lots of candy and fun giveaways to entice new members!
Any new clubs this year? Chess Club has transitioned to Game Club, with the addition of mahjong and puzzles. Game on!
Are the pubs student-run? Yes! The six publications in the Upper School are Ballast (the division’s newspaper), Cargoes (the yearbook), Dichos (world language literary magazine), Lonestar (ethics magazine), Starboard (online newspaper), and Windward (literary magazine).
How are clubs started? A student who’d like to organize a club must submit the following to the Student Affairs Committee and the Dean of Students:
-
A written proposal, with mission statement, description of activities, meeting agendas for the year, meeting time, and attendance policy, signed by the potential president and potential faculty club advisor
-
A petition of at least 10 names of students who are interested in joining
Student Affairs oversees the formation and continuation of clubs at the end of each year, and all club events, including fundraisers, will be registered with the Dean of Students. Over the course of the year, student leaders, with support from faculty advisors, manage their respective clubs.
Can anyone in the Upper School propose a new club? Just about! Any student may suggest a club following the conclusion of her sophomore year. Students in their freshman and sophomore years are encouraged to learn about and participate in existing clubs.
Can anyone in the Upper School join a club or a pub? Absolutely!
