A Journey Through Japan: Global Learning in Action

A Journey Through Japan: Global Learning in Action

Over the course of ten incredible days, a group of 15 Kent Place students in Grades 8–12, accompanied by four faculty chaperones, embarked on a global learning adventure across Japan. The itinerary, centered on supporting Kent Place’s history curriculum, led students to:

  • Compare and contrast the society of Japan with that of the United States
  • Gain an understanding of Japan’s historical and present-day role in both Asia and globally
  • Learn about the history and impact of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II
  • Discover the transformation of Japan from a closed society to a modern global power — through its architecture, business, culture, and government
  • Connect their academic, media, and personal knowledge of Japan to a more concrete understanding of the country

At the culmination of a 13-hour flight, the group landed in Tokyo, where their guide was on hand to greet them. The capital provided a whirlwind of first impressions: After a delicious meal of tonkatsu, the group explored Tsukiji Market’s flavorful offerings, stood among the grandeur of the Imperial Palace gardens, crossed the famous Shibuya Scramble, and found quiet reflection at the Meiji Shrine.

A high-speed bullet train whisked them to Kyoto, where highlights included Kiyomizu-dera, with its sweeping views, the shimmering Golden Pavilion, and a serene tea ceremony. The group also wandered through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and cooled off near the Katsura River.

In Nara, students saw sacred Sika deer and stood in awe of the massive bronze Buddha at Tōdai-ji, then enjoyed a hands-on sushi-making lesson. They continued on to Hiroshima, where visiting the Peace Park and Museum offered a powerful, emotional perspective on history and resilience.

In Osaka, students explored the whimsical Cup of Noodles Museum, climbed Osaka Castle, and played games in Shinsekai before savoring okonomiyaki. Their final full day, in Tokyo, featured breathtaking views from the Sky Tree Tower, shopping on Nakamise Street, and an interactive art experience at TeamLab Planets.

After a peaceful visit to Tokyo Bay, the students said farewell to their guide and boarded the flight home. Though glad to be back in the United States, they brought with them more than souvenirs — they returned with deeper global awareness, shared memories, and a lasting connection to Japan.
