Carlo D’Anselmi: “The Deep End” at the Kent Place Gallery

The Kent Place Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of artworks by Carlo D’Anselmi now through Friday, December 20, 2019.

D’Anselmi’s expressive oil on linen paintings in “The Deep End” show men and women in metaphorically charged encounters with water. They dive, float, swim or sink, moving in two worlds, above and below the water’s surface. The actual, physical surfaces of the paintings also provide a range of interpretation, offering lush and earthy marks that open into allusions to deep, sometimes complex spaces.
“D’Anselmi’s work explores an invented world”, says Gallery Director Ken Weathersby. “A cast of characters relaxes, works, or plays in the water, suggesting different ways of being. His swimming or wading figures seem to be dreaming or passing from one state to another, and encountering pleasure, boredom or danger. Certain aspects return from painting to painting, but always with an unexpected twist. His renderings of the human body suggest a confident understanding of form and bodily structures, and an equal confidence in distorting those structures for the sake of expression. An atmosphere of contemplation in these very physical paintings yields poetry.”
D’ Anselmi said of his work in this show, “Rafts, pools, oceans and rivers provide an ever-evolving dramatic stage in this group of work. The subject matter consists of metaphorical narratives such as plunging, moving through the depths, floating, sitting on the edge, breaking up through the surface, falling, losing someone, emerging, waiting, or finding something lost. The way in which the figures behave becomes a conscious and subconscious reality discovered by the figures contained in the paintings.”
Carlo D'Anselmi (b.1991) lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens. He received an MFA in painting from the New York Studio School (2015) and a BA in fine arts from Saint Anselm College (2013).
