The mission of the Girls’ Leadership Institute at Kent Place is to empower girls at the Primary, Middle, and Upper School levels to discover their full leadership potential. We accomplish this by providing programs and resources to our girls and to those in the greater community.
At every level, our summer institutes help girls explore their leadership potential, strengthen their self-esteem and turn plans into action, all through a broad range of hands-on activities. All of our programs are designed to build skills in several essential areas: communication, social and emotional intelligence, vision and goal setting, ethical decision making, leadership styles and cultural competence.
Our OWL’s (Outstanding Women Leaders) sharpen their public speaking and presentation skills, but also explore the impact of nonverbal communication. Working together, they experience their own leadership styles in different contexts as they learn about team building and group dynamics. They gain cultural competence and come to understand the tremendous impact each individual leader can have on her community through service, examining case studies, ethical decision making and creating a unique action plan.
Daily, participants find courage within themselves as they push beyond their own boundaries by conquering physical and mental challenges. They work closely with high school or college mentors and interact with adult women who share their personal and professional leadership paths. In a culminating presentation, each young leader showcases the skills she developed in the program’s workshops. Ongoing reflection is a vital part of the character-building process, and every girl journals regularly about her own journey as a leader throughout the program as well as how she will apply to her life after GLI the skills she is learning now. Graduates of our programs go on to become student government leaders, yearbook editors, team captains and club presidents.
The Summer Institutes, one-week and two-week summer enrichment programs, take place Monday through Friday on the centrally located campus of Kent Place School, in Summit, New Jersey. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m.
