Ethical Entrepreneurship Summer Program

The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School, in partnership with Montclair State University’s Center for Innovation, is running a coed virtual summer program for high school students on Ethical Entrepreneurship. This one-week virtual program combines ethics, product design, and entrepreneurship to help build the skills to become socially responsible leaders who can take an idea from incubation to creation. Experts in the fields of ethics, innovation, and business will guide students through identifying a need in their community, brainstorming solutions, and designing an innovative intervention.
The Coronavirus has had devastating effects on all aspects of our society:
  • Small Businesses in our Towns
  • City, County, and State Governments
  • Schools
  • Housing Markets
  • Manufacturers of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and other essential items
This summer program will be your IMPETUS TO ACTION!
  • Where do you see the greatest need?
  • What ethical innovation will you create to meet that need? 
As part of the ethical entreprenuership program, participants can expect to:
  • Define community challenges
  • Iterate solutions through innovation and entrepreneurship business models
  • Present outcomes at the culminating event on June 26, 2020
This program will encourage the development of:

Additional Add-On Package:
Participants can add a 1-2 hour per day direct instustruction class on 3D design for $125.

Features: This additional class session will provide students with an ethical digital design competency that can be applied to 3D Printing emphasizing prototypes and iterations to discover novel solutions to vexing problems. In Fusion 360, students will learn to harness the power of the software to complete sophisticated designs, parametric and generative design skills that can be applied to any 3D printer or entrepreneurial endeavor.

Outcomes: The learning objectives and outcomes of the program include:

2020 Program Details

DATES: June 22-26, 2020

TIMES: Monday – Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. 

LOCATION: Remotely

WHO: The program is open to rising 9th through 12th-graders, both KPS, and non-KPS students. This program is coed.

COST: $350, with an optional add on package ($125) for 1-2 hours per day of direct instruction around 3D design. Some financial aid is available.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: Computer with Internet and Zoom video conferencing capabilities. 
  • If selecting the optional 3D design instruction then they must have a computer that can download and run the program: Fusion 360
Participants who enroll in the optional program are asked to commit to the full program.

  • Karen Rezach

    Karen Rezach joined the Kent Place community in 2000, and is the Director of the Middle School and the Director of The Ethics Institute. She has a master’s in divinity from Yale University, an EdD from Seton Hall University and is an ordained Episcopal priest. Her doctoral research, “Spiritual Leadership as a Model of Effective Leadership in Independent School,” explores the ways in which educators can bring values and moral awareness in non-religious ways into a variety of school settings. Dr. Rezach has over 20 years of experience as an independent school administrator, including director of the middle school at Kent Place and assistant head of school at St. Philip’s Academy in Newark, NJ. She has been teaching and facilitating workshops on ethics for more than a decade.
  • Michele Ansbacher

    Michele Ansbacher holds a B.A. degree in economics and political science from Montclair State University and her M.B.A. degree in finance from New York University. She has recently retired from Prudential Financial. Her role prior to retiring was the Vice President of the Eastern Territory in Agency Distribution. She is currently an adjunct professor and chair of the advisory board for the Feliciano School of Business. She most recently accepted the role of Executive-in-Residence at the School of Business. Prior to her appointment as Eastern Territorial Vice President, she was vice president, Corporate Compliance and Corporate Chief Ethics Officer at Prudential. Previously, she was vice president of Field Support and also served as Agency Distribution’s business ethics officer.
  • Jason Frasca

    Jason Frasca is a top leader of New Jersey’s entrepreneurial community, who was recruited in 2014 to help evolve the entrepreneurship program at Montclair State University. Jason is an entrepreneurial business executive, marketing and sales professional with 20+ years of experience managing Fortune 500 and nationally recognized clients in direct marketing, small business, private investigations, and consulting for technology solutions development. He has dedicated his career to designing radically innovative process and solutions for his companies, employers and clients. By deconstructing complex problems Jason provides a systems design approach to the execution of optimized business performance. This optimization mindset has yielded massive results with limited resources.

    In the fall of 2014, Jason led the Feliciano Center for Entrepreneurship team in researching 3D Printing technology. The result: MIX Lab – which houses 35 cloud-connected 3D printing devices; the 9th such Innovation Center in the World. As the now Co-Director of the MIX Lab, Jason fuses design innovation skills with an entrepreneurial mindset to make things happen which is the core of MIX Lab’s mission.

    In addition to a strong background in big-picture design thinking Jason is trained and certified by VentureWell in the Lean LaunchPad Educators Program, and by the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative in the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program Facilitator Training. As the Entrepreneurship Instructor and Startup Mentor, Jason has developed and teaches all three courses of the Entrepreneurship Certificate program. Jason co-directs the ongoing development of the entrepreneurial curriculum with Professor Ross Malaga to incorporate the latest teachings on entrepreneurship. Jason is a sought-out advisor on entrepreneurship matters at Montclair State. He frequently counsels Montclair State students, faculty and staff, providing guidance and advice based on his experience at startups, and connecting those aspiring entrepreneurs with experts in the local startup community.

    Jason is a well-known and well-respected member of New Jersey’s startup and entrepreneurial communities. He has served as an organizer of one of the state’s top entrepreneurial Meetup groups and has been a presenter on several occasions. He was an organizer of the 2014 Google I/O Extended Conference in New Jersey, one of only 12 sites in the U.S. for the worldwide tech and entrepreneurship event. Jason uses his extensive and deep contacts in New Jersey’s startup and entrepreneurship communities to entice top-notch speakers to Feliciano Center classrooms and programs and to attract attendees to the center’s events.

    Jason is currently advising several startups, including SafeRoom, a zero-knowledge encryption platform, and consults with entrepreneurs to optimize the non-core elements of their business to boost performance. Additionally, he consults with major publishers, content websites, non-profits and mission-based businesses on their core and online strategy.
  • Iain Kerr

    Iain Kerr is a designer, systems thinker, and social entrepreneur, working at the intersection of creativity, ecology, and emergent systems. With a background in Architecture, Design, Art, and Philosophy, he brings a unique perspective to issues of social innovation, design, and entrepreneurship. His work is focused on inventing novel creative processes to transform seemingly intractable problems into problems worth having. Iain has spent the last two decades developing and teaching unique transformative models of creative processes.

    As the co-director of the MIX Lab, Iain has developed a new curriculum for using 3D printing to activate design thinking processes far from the normal realms of Industrial Design and Engineering. This innovative curriculum is at the heart of the lab’s certificate program in Innovation Design and Rapid Prototyping, as well as at the forefront of re-imagining Design Thinking as a powerful tool of innovation at all scales of action.

    In addition to co-directing the MIX Lab, Iain is a co-founder of the boundary-blurring design consultancy SPURSE which has been at the forefront of ecological research, experimental design, and innovation leadership for the last 15 years. While developing ground-breaking ways to probe, catalyze, disrupt and re-imagine systems both large and small, they have collaborated with communities, organizations, and individuals from the high arctic to the inner cities in Bolivia. Their award-winning projects reveal an astonishing range of creative solutions to effecting real change: from restaurants, wetlands, wayfinding apps, urban renewal programs, microbiology laboratories, cookbooks, buildings, everyday tools and more.

    Iain regularly works as a consultant, lecturer and workshop leader on creativity, innovation, and design (MIT, Harvard University, Columbia University, Parsons, Yale, CCA, and RISDI). His work, and that of SPURSE, has been exhibited internationally: USA, Poland, Netherlands, Italy, Japan, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Mexico and Bolivia, as well as published in books and journals (Furnitecture, The Interventionists, The Object of Labor, Experimental Geography, The International Encyclopedia of Human Geography, Surface, ID, New York Times, Elle, Teme Celeste, Art Papers, Monitor, Interior Design, and Art Journal). Currently, Iain is working on a book on Innovation Design, Ecology and Social Entrepreneurship.
  • Mark Semioli

    Mark Semioli, who has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Stanford University, earned his juris doctor from the Santa Clara School of Law and holds a master’s in elementary and middle school education from Mercy College. Mr. Semioli joined the Kent Place School faculty in 2010 and teaches Ancient and Classical Civilizations and World Cultures and Geography in the Middle School. Mark is the current Chair of the History Department, helps facilitate the Ethical Leadership in Business Summer Institute and assists with Kent Place’s Saturday-morning soccer program.
