Dance

The core mission of the Dance Department is to create an environment that encourages all students — no matter what level or skill — to develop an awareness of the body as an instrument for personal expression, and to experience dance as a participant as well as an informed audience member. Through various dance techniques such as ballet, jazz and modern, students build skills and a solid movement vocabulary. They explore their imagination and develop their creative voice by engaging in choreographic studies, which can range from class assignments to creating work that will be performed at the annual "An Afternoon of Dance" and “An Evening of Dance” concerts. Students also present their work in class for peer review and critique. An appreciation of dance as an art form is fostered through readings, film viewings, guest artists and attendance at live dance performances.
