In 2007 we celebrated the 35th Anniversary of the Black Cultural Association, an organization for students interested in promoting awareness of diversity and multiculturalism.

Creative Arts Workshop | Session I - June 28 - July 16 and Session II - July 19 - August 6
Boys and girls entering Grades 5 - 8
Hours: 8:50 a.m. - 3:05 p.m.
The Creative Arts Workshop offers students an opportunity to unleash their creativity, energy and imagination and explore a variety of media each day. Students participate daily in five areas of interest and a camp-wide activity period, and share in performances and art exhibits. Teachers in the Creative Arts Workshop are artists and professionals chosen for their expertise and ability to spark creativity within their students. Special events, such as camp picnics, demonstrations by professional artists and visiting performers, are held each session. Students will be placed in five classes each session depending on date of enrollment and scheduling availability.

CREATIVE ARTS WORKSHOP CHOICES:

ARCHERY: A camper favorite! Learn skills and safety practices.

NEW! ART SCIENCE: Create a groovy, heat-less lava lamp, explore momentum with spin art, design bubble art, develop “floam” with vinegar and skim milk, and use food coloring, cooking oil, glue and dishwashing detergent to make uniquely colorful chemical “creactions.”  Students will also create ooh-la-la oobleck, make their own recycled paper, dye flowers, create art with polished pennies, and become designers in a Proj-egg-t Runway egg-speriment.

NEW! BEADING: Learn various wire-wrapping techniques, stitching, stringing and making beads out of polymer clay to create one-of-a-kind jewelry.

CAMP CUISINE: (double period) Prepare appetizers, main courses, salads and desserts while learning basic kitchen skills and healthy eating habits. Compose your own cookbook with original recipes and illustations.

CARTOONING I: Design cartoon/comic strips, blow ups, t-shirts and acetate cells.

CARTOONING II: (pre-requisite Cartooning I) Build on prior cartooning experience by refining your traditional cartooning skills and adding to them using a digital Bamboo tablet and laptop.

CERAMICS: Create original art pieces and functional ware such as plates, mugs and bowls. Choose from a wide variety of fantastic glazes to make your work shine!

COOKING CONCOCTIONS: Make healthy snacks and tasty treats in a cozy kitchen setting. Quesadillas, Nachos Supreme, gourmet personal pizzas and Asian-inspired stir fry are a few of the delights campers will make.

NEW! COMPUTER ASSISTED DRAWING - 3D MODELS: Use Google Sketch Up to create 3D models of a skatepark for your hometown, redecorate your living room, design a new piece of furniture or model your city for Google Earth.

NEW! CULTURAL DANCE CLASS: Learn the basic steps to the energetic American Jive and Swing, Latin Ballroom Dances such as the Cha-Cha and Salsa, and the elegant moves of the Middle East. Campers perform a dance showcase at the end of each session.

NEW! DIGITAL ART: Create original computer art by adding pizzazz to your work. Campers will design a resume, create their own business cards, understand how to locate professional and academic opportunities of interest, select appropriate interview attire, practice interviewing skills, review their Internet image (what might potential employers see if they did their research) and discuss the pros and cons of social networking sites. This course will show students how to shine amongst a multitude of applicants.

DRAWING & PAINTING: Explore and combine a variety of drawing media such as charcoal, pastel and colored pencil. Painting media includes watercolor and acrylic on canvas. The work and techniques of famous artists are also discussed.

FASHION DESIGN: Design original fashions while learning fashion-sketching and color theory. Make-up application and techniques will also be included.

KNITTING & CROCHETING: Beginner through advanced learners are taught a variety of knit and crochet stitches and techniques to create items such as scarves, felted handbags, cell phone covers and baby gifts. Materials include a wide variety of specialty yarns.

NEW! LIGHTS, DIGITAL CAMERAS AND ACTION!: Import photos and/or video into a movie-making program, design a photo layout, add music, insert titles and transitions, and burn a DVD of the finished product, complete with a designed case. Campers will also create a camp news Podcast using iTunes, Photobooth and GarageBand. *Students must provide their own digital camera and USB cable.

SCULPTURE: Shape three-dimensional sculpture with papier mache, plaster, found objects, wire and wood. Use molds, casting and carving techniques to create original works of art.

SEWING: Using hand embroidery and a sewing machine, sew items such as hand embellished envelope bags, machine stitched shoulder bags, a basic skirt and hand-pieced quilted pillows.

STAINED GLASS: Cut and join together pieces of real stained glass to create two- and three-dimensional projects such as sun catchers, boxes, candle holders and window panels.

TENNIS: Learn the strokes, rules, court tactics and etiquette of tennis through drills and play.

THEATER WORKSHOP: (double period, must attend a full session) Experience the many facets of a theatrical production and perform in a short play at the end of each three-week session. Campers act as performers, designers, stagehands and technicians.
