On issues ranging from the environment to politics to culture, Kent Place students go beyond global awareness to action. The Global Service Learning Initiative is an opportunity to use the world as a living classroom and to explore new cultures with traditions and customs that stand in great contrast to our own. For example, during a school-sponsored trip to Tanzania, Upper and Middle School students engaged in community service projects to assist the Faraja Primary School and its students with physical disabilities.
Recent Trips
Costa Rica (Upper School - Spring 2012) The World Language Department will offer a return service trip to Costa Rica in spring/summer 2012 to build upon the relationships formed, Spanish language-skills developed and the service work completed on the initial trip in June 2011. This trip is offered in partnership with the World Leadership School (CO).
Guatemala (Upper School - Spring 2012)
KPS is partnering with From Houses to Homes (FHTH) to offer a one-week journey to Antigua, Guatemala. FHTH aims to strengthen community harmony in highland Guatemala by building lasting, healthy homes, improving access to health care and education and inspiring participation between the poor and civil society. The KPS team will be responsible for building two homes in a five-day period, while exploring and engaging in local culture, and spending afternoons at a school within the village.
New Orleans (Upper School - Spring 2012)
KPS is partnering with Rustic Pathways to help rebuild a great American city and work alongside New Orleanians who are reclaiming their communities and shaping the future of the city's historic neighborhoods. The KPS team will participate in rebuilding efforts with the St. Bernard Project to create housing opportunities so that Hurricane Katrina survivors can return to their homes and communities. In addition, students will become a part of life in the Big Easy… listening to zydeco music, spotting alligators in the bayou and sampling flavorful gumbo!
