Kent Place Voices

Kent Place was founded in 1894 by local fathers and businessmen who wanted to create a school for girls that would be comparable to the best boys' schools.
Students: Over 600 girls from 70 communities in New Jersey. Nursery and Pre-Kindergarten classrooms are coeducational.

Teachers: More than 170 faculty and staff members, 71 percent of whom hold master’s or doctoral degrees. The student-faculty ratio is 7:1, providing great opportunities for one-on-one interaction.

Location: Summit, NJ, roughly 20 miles west of New York City and easily accessible by train.

Campus: Primary, Middle and Upper Schools each include a library, science labs, art studios and a computer lab. The Arts Center features a large theater, an art gallery, a dance studio and practice rooms. Athletic facilities include a field house (gymnasium and weight room), two multi-purpose outdoor turf fields and five tennis courts.

Sports: Upper School teams in basketball, cross country, field hockey, squash, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track (indoor and outdoor) and volleyball; Middle School teams in basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Arts: Students in all grades can take advantage of visual arts, dance, drama and music instruction, as well as opportunities to join performing arts groups.

Service: Kent Place has a strong tradition of commitment to service at all grade levels, with recent projects for the American Red Cross, the YMCA, area food banks, soup kitchens and hospitals.

Technology: The Primary and Middle School have labs fully equipped with Apple computers, Internet access and multimedia equipment. Our laptop program equips every incoming ninth-grader with a portable computer that can utilize our wireless network.

Role Models: Visitors through the Kent Place Speakers Series have included playwrights Wendy Wasserstein and Anna Deavere Smith, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, women’s health advocate Dr. Susan Love, psychologist Mary Pipher, financial planner Suze Orman, renowned architect Maya Lin, co-host of Good Morning America Robin Roberts, marine biologist Sylvia Earle, paleoanthropologist Louise Leakey, actress Sonia Manzano and founder of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nancy Brinker.

Advanced Placement Options: Courses include Art History, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Computer Science A, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Environmental Science, European History, French Language, French Literature, Latin Literature (every other year), Latin Virgil (every other year) Macroeconomics, Music Theory, Physics B, Portfolio, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Statistics and United States History.

National Merit: Over the past six years, Kent Place has had an impressive 72 students recognized as National Merit Finalists, Semi-Finalists, Commended Students or National Achievement honorees.

After School Programs: Kent Place Kids, an extended-care program offering supervised time for play, special activities and homework for students in Kindergarten through grade 5; The 3:30 Club, a program for Middle Schoolers that allows time for working in the computer lab or library, completing homework in a quiet study area or doing a recreational activity, such as a game or arts and crafts project.
